Key Naval Chokepoints to Watch
⚠ Strait of Hormuz 20% of global oil passes through here. Iranian IRGC vessels frequently harass commercial and naval traffic. USN 5th Fleet maintains constant presence. Any closure would be catastrophic for global energy markets.
⚠ Red Sea / Bab el-Mandeb Houthi anti-ship missile and drone attacks have disrupted global shipping. USN and allied warships conducting Operation Prosperity Guardian to protect commercial vessels. Extremely high risk zone.
⚠ Taiwan Strait PLA Navy conducting increasing number of exercises in the strait. USN freedom of navigation operations ongoing. Any escalation here would have immediate global economic consequences.
⚠ Black Sea Russian Black Sea Fleet significantly degraded by Ukrainian strikes. Grain corridor contested. NATO monitoring all traffic closely through Turkish-controlled Bosphorus strait.
South China Sea China asserting control over disputed waters. Regular confrontations between Chinese Coast Guard and Philippine vessels near Scarborough Shoal and Second Thomas Shoal. USN carrier groups transit regularly.
Key Vessel Classes
Aircraft Carriers CVN · CV · CATOBAR The ultimate power projection tool. A US carrier strike group within range of a conflict is the most significant military signal possible.
🚢 Destroyers & Frigates DDG · FFG · Arleigh Burke Backbone of naval task forces. Equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, SM-3 interceptors and anti-submarine warfare systems.
Submarines SSN · SSBN · SSK Submarines rarely broadcast AIS. Track by port departures and known patrol areas. SSBNs carry nuclear ballistic missiles — the ultimate deterrent.
🚣 Amphibious Assault LHD · LHA · LPD · LST Movement of amphibious assault ships toward a coast is a major escalation signal. Capable of landing thousands of marines directly onto beaches.
How to Use the Naval Tracker
1
Click any vessel to see its name, type, flag, speed, heading and last known position.
2
Filter by vessel type — select Military to show only warships and naval vessels on the map.
3
Watch the chokepoints — zoom into the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea and Taiwan Strait for the most significant naval activity.
4
Carrier group detection — a carrier is always surrounded by 2-3 destroyers, 1-2 cruisers, a submarine and a supply ship. If you see a cluster of warships moving together, that is a carrier strike group.
